Saint Peter School
Library Facts
All classes, K through 8, use the library on regularly scheduled time periods. Each class is scheduled and has the opportunity to visit the library each week. Books are checked out, stories are read to students K through 3. The library has a small reference section for encyclopedias, World and United States atlas, dictionaries, sets of books which are for library use only. Also in this section is where the Teacher and Parent resources can be found. Internet is available for students to do research, as well as several computers to type reports. Students use the library for make-up tests, study purposes, and reading time.
Teachers extensively use the library resources, from checking out books for classroom usage to using the teacher resource section for their own personal use. On various occasions, the Early Childhood teachers use the library resources, and one preschool teacher brings her class on a weekly basis for story time. The Kindergarten teachers bring their A.M. and P. M. classes weekly. Stories are read in conjunction with subject matter studied in classroom.
Each year the library celebrates a special reading activity. During the month of March, we celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday by having our families joining in month long activities in the "Read Across America Celebration".
The library also has a "Birthday Book Club.î Members can join by donating a new book to the library in honor of their birthday. When a student donates a book for their birthday, with their permission, their picture is taken with their donation and then their picture is displayed on the "Birthday Book Club" wall in the library. This is a wonderful way to add new books to the library collection.
The library also provides instruction in library usage, i.e. how to use the card file, the automated catalog system, understanding the Dewey Decimal system, and how to use the reference section.
Mrs. Moore has a staff of 14 wonderful volunteers that help assist the students on their weekly visit to the library.
Birthday Book Club
The "Birthday Book Club" wall in the school library has the smiles of 15 students that have donated a reading "treat" in honor of their birthday. They are: Kayla Adams, Leah Allen, Sarah Fitzgerald, Rosamarie Harry, John Kauflin, Sarah Pierce, Seth Pierce, Emma Rondeau, Haleigh Shaw, Daniel Singleton, Douglas Sloan, Sarah Sloan, Jacqueline Sutton, Gretchan Theil, and Kelsey Weitz. A big "thank you" to these students and their parents for supporting our school library and the great joy of reading!
We would like to encourage ALL students to participate in this activity. Maybe you are getting weary of preparing or baking "treats" for your child to celebrate their birthday. This is a great alternative plus this is a "treat" that will last many years, and a great way to add to our library collection.
